Douglas Stuart won the 2020 Booker Prize with his debut novel "Shuggie Bain," a devastating portrait of a boy growing up with an alcoholic mother in 1980s Glasgow. The Scottish-American author drew on his own childhood to create fiction that refuses to look away from poverty, addiction, and queer coming-of-age. Stuart spent a decade writing the novel while working in fashion. His victory proved literary fiction could still find mass audiences.
