E.C. Bentley was a British journalist, novelist, and humorist best known for inventing the clerihew verse form and for Trent's Last Case, widely considered the first modern detective novel. A close friend of G.K. Chesterton and a prominent Fleet Street journalist, he brought literary polish and psychological realism to detective fiction.
