Edna O'Brien was an Irish novelist and short story writer whose debut, The Country Girls, was banned and burned in Ireland for its frank portrayal of female sexuality. Over a career spanning six decades, she wrote more than twenty novels, including August Is a Wicked Month, A Pagan Place, In the Forest, and The Light of Evening. She was awarded the PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature.
