Édouard Glissant was a Martinican novelist, poet, playwright, and philosopher, regarded as one of the most original thinkers in twentieth-century postcolonial thought. His concepts of creolization, opacity, and Relation have influenced scholars across literary criticism, philosophy, and cultural studies. Caribbean Discourse (1981) and Poetics of Relation (1990) are his major theoretical works; his fiction includes the Creole epic Malemort (1975) and the Sartoris-like Mahagony (1987).
