Elizabeth Bowen

Irish · 1899–1973

Elizabeth Bowen wrote novels of psychological precision about the Anglo-Irish and wartime England. "The Death of the Heart" exposed the cruelties of English social life through an orphaned girl's eyes; "Eva Trout" earned a 1970 Booker Prize shortlisting near the end of her career. The Irish-born author moved between London and her family's Cork estate, belonging fully to neither world. Bowen's prose registers the smallest social vibrations.
