Epictetus was a Stoic philosopher born into slavery in Hierapolis, Phrygia. Freed after the death of his master Epaphroditus, he studied under the Stoic teacher Musonius Rufus and eventually established his own school in Nicopolis. He wrote nothing himself; his teachings survive through the transcriptions of his student Arrian.
