Erik Axel Karlfeldt celebrated the peasant life of his native Dalarna in verse that made him Sweden's most beloved poet of the early twentieth century. His collections—including "Fridolin's Songs"—transformed regional folklore into sophisticated lyric poetry without sacrificing their earthy vitality. Karlfeldt declined the 1918 Nobel Prize in Literature, finding it inappropriate while serving as Secretary of the Swedish Academy. The prize was awarded posthumously in 1931, honoring poetry that had become synonymous with Swedish national identity.
