Eyvind Johnson escaped poverty in Sweden's far north to become one of the twentieth century's most inventive novelists. His autobiographical tetralogy traced his early years, while later works reimagined classical narratives for modern times—"Return to Ithaca" retold the Odyssey to explore themes of homecoming and identity. Johnson shared the 1974 Nobel Prize in Literature with fellow Swede Harry Martinson. His experiments with stream of consciousness and multiple perspectives brought European modernism to Swedish fiction.
