F. Abiola Irele was one of the foremost scholars of African and Francophone literature, having taught at the University of Ibadan, Ohio State University, and Harvard. His landmark study The African Experience in Literature and Ideology (1981) and his editions of major African texts established him as a central figure in the field. He was also a founding editor of the journal Research in African Literatures.
