Fay Weldon wrote about women's lives with comic fury. The British novelist's more than thirty books examined marriage, motherhood, and female friendship with a sardonic wit that never softened into sentimentality. Her 1978 novel "Praxis" was shortlisted for the Booker Prize; her television adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" introduced Austen to new audiences. Weldon trained as an advertising copywriter—she created the slogan "Go to work on an egg"—and brought that economy to fiction that refused to let women's domestic concerns be dismissed as trivial.
