Ferdinand de Saussure was a Swiss linguist whose lectures at the University of Geneva were compiled and published posthumously as the Course in General Linguistics (1916). His distinction between langue and parole, and his theory of the arbitrary linguistic sign, became the foundation of structuralism and semiotics across the humanities.
