Fiona Mozley's debut novel "Elmet" emerged from the landscape of Yorkshire where she grew up. The 2017 Booker Prize shortlist selection follows a family living outside the law in a hand-built house on disputed land, until violence arrives in mythic form. Mozley wrote much of the novel during train commutes, crafting a story that blends social realism with folktale atmosphere, contemporary class conflict with ancient patterns of dispossession.
