Francis Bacon was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, and author who served as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England. He is widely regarded as the father of empiricism and the scientific method. His philosophical works include The Advancement of Learning and Novum Organum, and his Essays remain among the most quoted works in English prose.
