French novelist who scandalized Paris at eighteen with her debut Bonjour Tristesse. Born Françoise Quoirez, she took her pen name from Proust. That first novel—cynical, sensual, modern—sold millions and made her famous for being famous as much as for writing. Fast cars, gambling, affairs, and more novels followed. Critics dismissed her as lightweight; readers kept buying. The best work—Bonjour Tristesse, A Certain Smile, Aimez-vous Brahms—captures postwar malaise through disaffected youth. The persona sometimes overshadowed the prose, which remains sharper than its reputation.
