Frédéric Mistral devoted his life to reviving Provençal literature and the Occitan language. The French poet founded the Félibrige movement to restore the prestige of a tongue relegated to peasant speech. His epic poem "Mireille" told a tragic love story in Provençal while demonstrating the language's capacity for serious literature. Mistral shared the 1904 Nobel Prize in Literature with José Echegaray, recognized for his poetry and his philological work preserving a threatened linguistic heritage.
