Gabriela Mistral became the first Latin American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945. The Chilean poet—born Lucila Godoy Alcayaga—wrote verse of stark emotional power, particularly about love, loss, and children. Her collections "Desolation" and "Tala" established her as a major voice while she worked as an educator and diplomat across the Americas and Europe. Mistral's poems, shaped by grief over a young love's suicide and her own childlessness, achieved a maternal tenderness without sentimentality.
