The novel—about two friends who build video games together across thirty years—became the Amazon Best Book of the Year, won the Goodreads Choice Award, and sold millions of copies. Zevin brings insider knowledge to her subject; she has written video games herself, including adaptations of her own novels. Her earlier work includes The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry (2014), about a widowed bookstore owner, and young adult novels like Elsewhere. Born in New York City, she studied film at Harvard. Her writing is warm but never sentimental, precise about the creative process and the complications of long friendships. She lives in Los Angeles and continues to work in video games.
