Gao Xingjian fled China after the Tiananmen Square massacre and became a French citizen, writing in Chinese about exile, memory, and inner freedom. His 1990 novel "Soul Mountain" blended autobiography, folklore, and philosophical meditation across a journey through China's remote southwest. The 2000 Nobel Prize in Literature honored his "oeuvre of universal validity, bitter insights and linguistic ingenuity." Gao also works as a painter and playwright, extending his explorations of consciousness across media.
