Gary Paulsen ran the Iditarod twice, sailed solo across the Pacific, and turned his wilderness experiences into over two hundred books for young readers. Hatchet, a Newbery Honor book, became the most widely read survival novel in American schools. He grew up in near-feral conditions and began writing after working as a satellite technician, trapper, and migrant farm worker.
