Georg Lukács

Hungarian · 1885–1971

Georg Lukács was a Hungarian philosopher and literary critic whose work spans from pre-Marxist aesthetics (The Theory of the Novel, Soul and Form) through major Marxist theory (History and Class Consciousness) to mature literary criticism (The Historical Novel, Studies in European Realism). He served briefly as Hungary's Minister of Culture during the 1956 uprising. The Theory of the Novel, written in his youth, remains his most influential work on literary form.
