Mary Ann Evans published under the male pseudonym George Eliot to ensure her work would be taken seriously. She had reason for confidence: her novels—Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Middlemarch, Daniel Deronda—are among the greatest achievements of Victorian fiction. Before turning to novels, she worked as editor and translator, bringing Spinoza and Feuerbach to English readers. Her fiction combines psychological depth with social breadth, creating provincial communities rendered with Tolstoyan completeness. She lived openly with the married philosopher George Henry Lewes, a scandal that isolated her from respectable society but gave her material for exploring the gap between moral convention and moral reality. Virginia Woolf called Middlemarch "one of the few English novels written for grown-up people."
