George Mackay Brown rarely left Orkney, the Scottish archipelago where he was born, yet his writing achieved mythic resonance. His poetry and prose drew on the islands' Viking history, Catholic faith, and fishing communities to create work that felt ancient and contemporary at once. "Beside the Ocean of Time" earned a 1994 Booker Prize shortlisting in what proved his final year. Brown's Orkney became a literary landscape as distinctive as Faulkner's Mississippi.
