Georgi Gospodinov won the 2023 International Booker Prize for "Time Shelter," a novel about weaponized nostalgia in which a clinic treating dementia patients through recreated pasts triggers a continent-wide retreat from the present. The Bulgarian author writes poetry, short stories, and novels that probe memory and history with dark wit. "The Physics of Sorrow" earned earlier international recognition; with "Time Shelter," Gospodinov established himself as one of Europe's most inventive literary voices.
