Gilberto Freyre was a Brazilian sociologist, historian, and writer whose work on racial mixing and colonial society transformed Brazilian self-understanding. Educated at Baylor University and Columbia under Franz Boas, he returned to Recife to write Casa-Grande & Senzala, which he published at thirty-three. He remains a controversial figure—celebrated for his analytical originality, criticized for aestheticizing racial hierarchy.
