Giorgos Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature, the first Greek writer so honored. The poet and diplomat wrote verse that drew on Greek mythology and landscape to explore exile, loss, and Mediterranean identity. His collection "Mythistorima" merged modern sensibility with ancient resonance. Seferis lived through his country's tumultuous twentieth century, finding in poetry a form adequate to historical catastrophe.
