Giosuè Carducci won the 1906 Nobel Prize in Literature "not only in consideration of his deep learning and critical research, but above all as a tribute to the creative energy, freshness of style, and lyrical force which characterize his poetic masterpieces." The Italian poet revived classical forms, particularly in "Odi barbare," which adapted Greek and Latin meters to Italian. Carducci championed a secular, patriotic poetry that influenced Italian letters for generations.
