Graciliano Ramos

Brazilian · 1892–1953

Graciliano Ramos was a Brazilian novelist whose spare, austere prose is considered among the finest in Portuguese-language literature. His major works include Barren Lives, São Bernardo, and Memoirs of Prison. A political prisoner under the Vargas dictatorship, he wrote with unflinching honesty about poverty, power, and human limitation.
