Grant Morrison is a Scottish comics writer born in Glasgow in 1960. They began in British small-press and weekly comics, then moved to DC Comics in the late 1980s. Their early American work includes Animal Man and Doom Patrol, which brought surreal and metafictional ideas into superhero stories. Arkham Asylum, drawn by Dave McKean in 1989, became one of the best-selling original graphic novels of its time. In the 1990s they wrote The Invisibles, a long series about magic, conspiracy and reality. Later work includes JLA, New X-Men, All-Star Superman with Frank Quitely, and a seven-year run on Batman that built a single story from the character's entire history. They have also written Supergods, a book about superheroes and their cultural meaning, and have worked in television and film. Morrison has won multiple Eisner Awards. Their writing matters because it treated superhero comics as a space for formal experiment and philosophical argument, and it influenced many later writers in the medium.
