Guy de Maupassant was one of the greatest French short story writers and a master of the naturalist novel. A protégé of Gustave Flaubert, he produced some three hundred short stories and six novels in a career cut short by syphilis and madness. His works are celebrated for their economy, precision, and unsentimental observation of human nature.
