Hélène Cixous is a French feminist writer, theorist, playwright, and philosopher. Born in Oran, Algeria, to a German Jewish father and an Austro-Hungarian Jewish mother, she founded the first Centre d'Études Féminines in Europe at Paris VIII. Her essay 'The Laugh of the Medusa' is the founding text of écriture féminine. She has published over seventy works of fiction, theory, and drama.
