Halldór Laxness won the 1955 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his vivid epic power which has renewed the great narrative art of Iceland." His masterpiece "Independent People" followed a stubbornly autonomous sheep farmer through decades of hardship, combining social realism with saga tradition.
