Helen Dunmore won the inaugural Orange Prize for "A Spell of Winter" and wrote more than a dozen novels before cancer claimed her at sixty-four. The British author's "The Siege" depicted Leningrad's wartime starvation with intimate focus. Dunmore also published poetry and children's books, bringing the same attention to language across genres. Her final collection won the Costa Poetry Award posthumously.
