Herbert Marcuse was a German-American philosopher and critical theorist associated with the Frankfurt School. His works — including Eros and Civilization, One-Dimensional Man, and An Essay on Liberation — combined Marxist social analysis with Freudian psychology and became major intellectual influences on the New Left and the counterculture of the 1960s.
