Herodotus of Halicarnassus traveled the Mediterranean and Near East in the fifth century BCE, collecting stories, observing customs, and producing the first sustained work of historical prose. Cicero called him 'the father of history.' His Histories remains both a primary source for the Greco-Persian Wars and one of the most entertaining works of antiquity.
