English · 1893–1979

Ivor Armstrong Richards was a Cambridge literary scholar who, more than any other single figure, created the modern discipline of close reading. Practical Criticism, based on experiments with student readers, and Principles of Literary Criticism, which grounded aesthetic value in psychology, became the methodological foundation of the New Criticism. He later taught at Harvard and devoted himself to Basic English and language pedagogy.
