Iain Banks published literary fiction under his own name and science fiction as Iain M. Banks. His Culture series—ten novels imagining a post-scarcity utopia—is the most ambitious and influential space opera of the late 20th century. He died of gallbladder cancer at 59, mourned across the literary world.
