Ismail Kadare won the inaugural International Booker Prize in 2005 for his lifetime achievement. The Albanian novelist wrote under and against communist dictatorship, producing fiction that used historical allegory to comment on contemporary oppression. "The General of the Dead Army" established his international reputation. Kadare's death in 2024 ended a career that made Albanian literature visible to the world.
