Ivan Klima was a Czech novelist, playwright, and essayist who spent decades writing under Communist censorship. A childhood survivor of the Theresienstadt concentration camp, he initially supported the Communist regime before becoming a dissident. His novels, circulated in samizdat during normalization, explore the moral compromises of life under totalitarianism with quiet irony and compassion.
