Ivy Compton-Burnett was a British novelist who developed a unique form of fiction composed almost entirely of dialogue. Her twenty novels, set in late Victorian and Edwardian upper-class households, explore tyranny, cruelty, and power within families. Her highly stylized conversations, in which characters speak with devastating precision, have been compared to the work of Harold Pinter and the Greek tragedians.
