Jacinto Benavente won the 1922 Nobel Prize in Literature "for the happy manner in which he has continued the illustrious traditions of the Spanish drama." The Spanish playwright wrote more than 170 plays, bringing European theatrical innovations to Madrid's stages. "The Bonds of Interest" demonstrated his mastery of satirical comedy. Benavente dominated Spanish theater for decades.
