Jacques Derrida was a French philosopher born in Algeria whose deconstruction of Western metaphysics transformed literary theory, philosophy, and the humanities from the late 1960s onward. He taught at the École normale supérieure and at universities in the United States, and his work generated both intense influence and intense controversy.
