James Alan McPherson won the 1978 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction with "Elbow Room," becoming the first African American to receive that honor. The American author's two story collections established him as a master of the form, writing about race and class with subtlety and anger. McPherson taught at the Iowa Writers' Workshop for three decades, shaping generations of writers.
