James Dickey wrote "Deliverance" after a career as an advertising executive and poet. The American author's 1970 novel about a canoe trip gone violently wrong became a bestseller and a controversial film. Dickey's poetry won the National Book Award. He spent his later years as a beloved if controversial figure at the University of South Carolina.
