James Fenimore Cooper was an American novelist who wrote the Leatherstocking Tales, a series of five novels featuring the frontiersman Natty Bumppo. He was the first major American novelist and his work established many of the themes — the frontier, the clash of civilizations, the romance of the wilderness — that would define American fiction.
