Janet Frame was a New Zealand novelist, poet, and short-story writer. Misdiagnosed with schizophrenia, she spent eight years in psychiatric hospitals before her literary talent was recognized. Her works include Owls Do Cry, Faces in the Water, and the three-volume autobiography. She is widely regarded as New Zealand's greatest writer of prose fiction.
