Jean Craighead George wrote over one hundred books about the natural world, drawing on her family's tradition of naturalism—her father and twin brothers were all professional naturalists. My Side of the Mountain and Julie of the Wolves both won or were honored by the Newbery committee. She kept wild animals in her home and tested many of the survival techniques she wrote about.
