Jens Peter Jacobsen was a Danish novelist, poet, and scientist whose small body of work had an outsized influence on European literature. His two novels, Marie Grubbe and Niels Lyhne, and his short stories pioneered psychological realism and impressionistic prose in Scandinavian fiction. Rilke, Thomas Mann, and Stefan Zweig all acknowledged his decisive influence on their work.
