John Ball was an American author and aviation journalist whose In the Heat of the Night won the Edgar Award and became a cultural landmark through Sidney Poitier's iconic film performance. Ball created one of the first prominent Black detective protagonists in American fiction. He wrote extensively about aviation before turning to mystery fiction.
