John Gledson is Emeritus Professor of Brazilian Studies at the University of Liverpool. He is the leading anglophone scholar of Machado de Assis and has translated several of Machado's novels and stories into English. His work reoriented Machado scholarship by insisting on the historical specificity of Machado's social critique.
