John Hersey won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction with "A Bell for Adano," about American military government in Sicily. The American journalist and novelist also wrote "Hiroshima," the New Yorker article that occupied an entire issue and remains the definitive account of the atomic bomb's human toll. Hersey brought journalistic precision to both fiction and nonfiction.
